Chapter 55
“All mortals do since that is the essence of everything. Bargains happen in the spirit world. I have no knowledge of her reasons.” She replied with a shrug.
“Why was Cora so adamant that the devil doesn’t exist?”
“Well, Cora’s correct that mortals don’t know the spiritual world,” the elemental replied.
I noticed how carefully she considered her words as she leaned back in the seat.
“A mortal’s knowledge only contains glimpses of the truth in your religious books. True understanding comes when the spirit is strong enough to gain such knowledge. But I suspect she’s also frightened.”
“Of what?” I asked the obvious.
“You’re a clever man. Why would she be afraid of Lees? Cora is dead, and she exists as a spirit only. Lees is an outsider and alive with the powers she carries. Shouldn’t he have the power to take what he wants?”
The observation threw me a bit since I hadn’t considered these differences. My focus came from Cora’s instructions.
The bitch drags me here and I’m following her instructions like a dog!
“She told me her disappearance would destroy Stull Junction and all the familiars.” I sighed when I thought about it further.
“She’s lying to me. You just told me the elementals built this dimension using her and the energy comes from all the activity and interactions within Stull Junction. I’m assuming that means positive and negative emotions.”
Alice nodded.
“That must mean she would lose what little control she still has, but the place remains.”
I stated my theory as Alice pulled her car into a parking space in front of the Royal Building. As I scanned the street and sidewalk nervously, I noticed she didn’t admit if my idea was correct or not.
“Don’t worry, I know where your enemies are at,” she said in a sing-song voice. “You should be able to answer your questions about what Cora fears.”
Mulling over her hints, I started to waver about my initial thought. It seemed obvious that Cora feared Lees’ power. Cora claimed that she needs to go to the next realm but I’m thinking it’s a convenient lie. Everyone wants to live forever. Cora admitted she was afraid of dying and created this place. So, there’s another more obvious reason.
“Cora’s afraid of Lees capturing her spirit. Once she’s gone, he still can’t control what she can. I think he needs her to completely control this place.”
“I can neither confirm nor deny your statement.”
Alice’s mischievous grin told me I was on the right track. So, I went a step further.
“For the sake of argument, if you had such power as an enchanter and wanted to live on after your body is taken, what would you do?”
