Chapter 56
Sally pulled into a parking spot on the far side of the in front of Adele’s apartment building.
“I don’t think this is a smart idea,” she told Adele again as she rolled down the window. “You can see the police car near the front door.”
“It’s fine! You park in the alley, and I’ll go in to use the back stairs.” Adele spoke with more confidence than she felt. “The policeman is just sitting in his car to scare us off. I have to get some of our stuff from our place. I can’t walk into a bank or store at this point.”
“I can cover that,” Sally replied.
“No, that’s not fair to you. Anyway, Lane and I need stuff to stay out of sight. Look, if anything looks like a problem, I’ll come right back. You keep the car running and wait for me there.”
With a frown, Sally put the car back in gear and followed the lot to the alley behind the building. She pulled her vehicle next to a large trash container, then parked, leaving the engine running. The two women looked at the apartment complex and the back entrance which appeared deserted.
“See, I told…” Adele’s expression instantly changed.
Sally turned to look and felt a heavy fist strike the side of her head. In a flash, Hamm opened the driver’s door and dragged the small woman out of the car by her collar.
After the initial shock, Adele tried to escape through the other door, but the convict grabbed her wrist and pulled her back into the car. When the woman tried to yell for help, he quickly slugged her twice in the face twice. Blood spurted from Adele’s nose as she felt herself pushed to the floorboard.
As Hamm closed the passenger door, Sally tried to intervene by grabbing the man’s clothes and hair.
“You bitch!” Hamm roared as he elbowed Sally in the face.
