Chapter 54
After the women went to the hospital, I paced around the apartment, then pulled out my .45 which I retrieved from my office. When I looked through my pockets for ammo, I realized I didn’t even have half a clip left.
Mulling over my options, I picked up O’Conner’s revolver which contained three live rounds. While I thought of getting rid of the revolver, I concluded it didn’t matter if the cops caught me with it.
They’ll probably shot me before arresting me!
Realizing that I couldn’t walk into a store to buy more cartridges, I decided to call my office. Alice picked up on the second ring.
“This line might be tapped,” she immediately said when she recognized my voice.
“Hang up and I’ll come for you.”
The line clicked dead before he had a chance to respond.
How does she know where I am?
I took a quick show and got dressed, making sure my weapons were on me. While I waited by watching the parking area, I held my breath each time a car slowed near the entrance to the lot. Still wondering how Alice knew I was here; I spotted a black sedan pulling into the parking lot. The vehicle slowed to a crawl as the driver appeared to look over the building. Finally, the sedan stopped by the curb and a woman stepped out. Despite the distance, I noticed how striking she looked. More surprising was the fact that she looked directly at the window I stared down from and waved at me.
A couple of minutes later, I’m standing in front of a pretty woman who I’ve never seen. Well, I thought that until I heard her voice.
“Don’t look so surprised, Mr. Dagger. I told you that you’d see me when you needed to.”
To say Alice was a beauty was an understatement. She had high cheekbones and full lips that enhanced her regal face. However, it was the bluest eyes I’d ever seen which made me stare at her after getting in the car. From her profile, I saw her cute overbite and I recognized her.
Gene Tierney!
By this point during my time in Stull Junction, I understood the familiars often looked like famous movie stars. Still, I had the strong urge to ask her for an autograph. She smiled at me as we drove away.
“I remind you of someone, don’t I?”
When I told her who I thought she looked like, she chuckled.
“You are a clever man. Most mortals of your age would not recognize me. It appears I was correct in taking this form for you.”
My mouth fell open at the way she spoke, and she patted my leg.
“I know it’s a shock, but it was time for me to step in.”
Her motherly tone reassured me. However, I couldn’t get my arms around her intentions.
“What do you mean?”
“Isn’t it obvious? You’re a wanted man with a price on your head. All of this is caused by two enchanters fighting over Skull Junction.”
